Questions to Think Over

As I mentioned in class, here are a serious of questions that were asked at the AAM session, "Eye on Design: Inspiration from Outside the Museum." Do you think these are applicable to the Yager Museum? Do you have any answers to share?
  • What design elements will bring a new breed of visitor through the door?
  • How can you inspire your visitors to think of your museum as their museum?
  • How can we tap into memories of childhood to make risk-taking comfortable in the design process?
  • Do you consider the visitor a design element?
  • How can people create and maintain personal spaces in public museums?
  • How can you give peopel the props, setting, and social support so that they freely exchange ideas and skills?

See you all at 8:30am in front of the Yager Museum tomorrow.

I think these ideas have definite application possibilities. Every place you go a tone is set and a certain space is created due to design. Before getting into how to design, certain essential questions like: who is the museum for, how should they feel in it, and how is it to be used need to be answered. Then the HOWs can be answered as to making this vision happen. I think looking at other museum settings and recalling how you feel in them could help inspire a 'make over' for the yager. I think the nice chairs have helped to invite people to sit, talk and stay. More of that needs to happen. Donna has in the works a space where the museum club can post news-making more of a student presence and how to get involved visible. Another good positive change that will better engage students. Hosting events like we did that are interactive and social also will start to create a new image of what the Yager is about...as well as other tools like the facebook group and even the tshirts. If people-even the few in the museum club- are excited and show their enthusiasm for the museum with their friends a good reputation can spread...thus creating a 'people' design for the museum.
